Got about 200 miles on my new Yokohama Avid 205/55/16 rear tire and I am pleased, to say the least. It rides a little rougher than I had expected, but I suppose when I play with the pressure, that will get better. It is not bad as it sits, just a little rougher than I expected -- except on the dirt road that I live on. That is a real experience! Feels like riding a bucking horse as it wants to follow each and every rut that I come close to, lol. I expect that I will get used to that.
The bike does feel more stable on the highway, and is definitely easier to balance at stops. I like it!!

Drop your pressure down into the 30's ,your ride will improve and so will your control on rough surfaces. Very Happy Very Happy

Thanks for the reply. I had planned to do some pressure changing, but from what I have read, I should wait until I have 500 or so miles on the tire first. Is that the correct logic, or is the 500 mile thing not necessary?

75 to 100 miles should be plenty to wear the slipperiness off. I started at 40psi and worked down.
I feel 38psi works best for me. You might also look at your shock settings to soften up the roughness.

I run the same tire except in a 205/70/15 size. Have found 38 for 2 up and 36 for just me works good. Welcome to the darkside. When you get to 500 miles you will know everything about how your tire handles. The mold release should wear off real quick if your running up and down a dirt road. with 200 miles its probably gone now. Play with the pressure and enjoy the ride.

Thanks for the responses. I put new shocks on, along with a 1300 final, when I put the tire on. The shocks that I replaced were Progressive 11" that came off a friend's Road King. They were a for sure stiff ride. These are Progressive 11.5" for the VTX so they are already softer than the old ones. I think the harshness is the tire having too much pressure. I will, however, work with the shock settings and pressure to find the best combo.

welcome and have fun playing with the settings... when you find a good air pressure it'll try and track the ruts a little less too...

Well, I have a shade over 2200 miles on my Yokohama AVID now, and I could not possibly be happier. I must have the pressure right, because it sure rides well. I cannot tell any difference between the handling of this tire and the E-3 that I replaced as far a how it tracks in curves. It is also light years better on the freeway.
I have had very little negative reaction from folks when they see that I have a car tire. There have been one or two who might not have thought it was a good idea, but most are just interested in how it is working out for me. I never try to persuade anyone to get one, just tell them of my positive experience.
Just thought that I would update my darkside experience.....

Thanks for the update. What pressure did you end up at?

38 pounds seems to be my best pressure. My bike is set up solo, so the only weight that I have to worry about is me.
