Long shot, but darksiding a 04' Vulcan 500??? Empty Long shot, but darksiding a 04' Vulcan 500???

Can it be done?

The original tire is a 140/90-15. I can't find any 140's in the car tires.

I did however find a 145/65R15 here.

It says the rim width needs to be between 4 and 5 inches.

What do you all think and has anybody actually done one?

There is one sure fire way to find out. If it doesn't you can always sell the tire on e-bay, maybe even make a little.

I think it will too short for you! Try the 165/80/15 tire! I ran one for two years on 1300 and so did a lot of others and it's a great tire! It will be about 1/8" to 1/4" taller than stock with would put you a perfect replacement as you can get. The 145/65 would make it a 3/4" to 1" shorter than stock. That's just too short and will cause your motor to scream it's guts out going down the highway!

Thanks for the reply Bobby. I realized that after I posted. I'm now looking at a 155/80/15. Really close match. However, that tire and the tire you posted require a wider rim and I believe my rim is only about 3" wide. I believe I'm out of luck. A 140 might work, but I can't find any car tires in a 140 or 145 size.

I would guess that trying to fit a 155 or 165 on a 3" rim would be a no-go. Correct?

Edited because I had "not" instead of "now"

do this first and don't worry about the rim for right now:
https://mcdarksiders.forumotion.com/general-motorcycle-tech-information-f14/how-to-check-to-see-the-maximum-tire-size-to-fit-your-bike-t3153.htm

then you will know the dimensions and can look-up the specs of something like the 165-80/15 and see if it will fit under the bike .

as far as the rim goes ,, I have seen that tire on a stock VTX1300C rim and that is only 3.5" wide, so that might not be an issue.
good luck Bowbender.

+1 on what twin said.

I would not be too concerned about rim width unless you were trying to put a low profile tire on there. The Kumho, or the federal tire that Otis56 uses should work fine, 165/80/15. I think they make a 90 also.

It is a GO!!!!! I am telling you the 165 will work. I put it on my 1300 and our rims are just barely over 3" wide! We all did it! Just you DON'T have any doubt of what I am talking about...I now ride a 205/60/15 installed on the same 1300 and the same rim (3") that I put the 165 on!....Very Happy

Again bobby, thanks.

I'm new to this. What tire were you running at 165/80/15 that you liked?

Oh, and I have read on here I can use my existing tube size (spoke rims). Is this true? I don't really want to seal them if I don't have to.

Yes...the 165/80/15 is the tire and yes you can use your tube. It just takes a lot more patience and finesse to get it to seat the bead.

Kumho PowerStar 758 165/80/15

$43 at tire rack

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Kumho&tireModel=Power+Star+758

Bunch of us had this for our first tire. Great tire. Lasts 15k miles. Easy on and off. Not a lot to get used to going to the dark side on this tire. Great first tire.

I've got my Dunlop on a spoked 3 1/2" rim (actually not measured--just what it says on the rim itself) and although the tire was pulled in, it worked fine. I used the stock tube from the bias although my ct is a tubless.

The tire on my Nomad calls for a 5.5 inch rim. It's mounted on a 3.5 inch rim, and it's a 175/60/16. Just do it. You will love it.
