Prep Rim For Tire Mounting??

Post  wb9uze on Wed May 06, 2009 12:59 pm

I had the rear wheel off the '06C once to install the 1300 final. There are some things, as I recall, that might need to be removed prior to taking the wheel in to mount the car tire. There is the flange assy which appeared to be bolted down and also the spline gear that sticks out and engages the rear drive assy but I think that it is mounted into rubber bushings and may just pull out by hand. What do I need to do to prep/remove from the the rim prior to dismounting the old tire and installing a new one. The tire company said they could mount it for me but I'm not privy to just what equipment they use. I presume they would be using something they also use to mount tires on aluminum or mag wheels. So what, if anything, do I need to remove from the center of the rim??

Same here. I didn't do anything except remove the tire and take it in to the shop. A real treat, by the way, with a trailer hitch in the midst of it all. Bike had to go WAY up! lol GoodLuck on the switch.

Thanks, I hope they don't mess up the spline drive.

let the air out, removed the wheel, got three 4x4x8" blocks of wood , rested the rim on the wood, jumped on the tire and it broke the bead, flatten three plastic 1qt oil cans , cover the rim with the plastic where you are pressing it with the metal tire spoons (I use three tire spoons), tire comes right off,
CLEAN THE RIM , a dirty rim will give you fits trying to get the bead to set , I mixed 1 cup of olive oil with 1 cup of Dawn dish washing soap and 5 cups water mix well makes a very slippery emulsion, brush on rim and tire , and check the direction the tire goes on , then check the spot on the tire that goes closest to the valve stem ( a spot of paint ), place the plastic over the rim so the spoons don't chew up your rim and install the tire.
connect an air chuck to the valve stem and stand back to the other end of the air hose and connect it to the compressor , watch the pressure on the air hose and when the bead pops disconnect the hose from the compressor and tire. check the bead on both sides , check the pressure and let out air down to about 40 psi. ( mine popped at 80psi ), clean wheel and tire. install on bike.
if you want to see people chancing tires on motorcycles go to youtube and type in " motorcycle tire change " and you will get over a hundred.
good luck, have fun,
