Tire rubbing Empty Tire rubbing

Post  ok18cvtx Mon Apr 05, 2010 6:51 pm

I'm running a michelin Hydroedge 205/65-r16 on my 2003 1800C. Took my 10 year old son for a ride yesterday and thought I smelled rubber burning. When I got off the bike I could see where the tire is rubbing on the swingarm. There was an accumulation of rubber on the swingarm as well. I put it on last year and i didn't notice this problem. Any ideas of where to start looking for the problem. Thanks

first check the tire pressure , then turn up the shocks to the next higher setting, then if it still rubs jack the bike up and see if you have a rear wheel bearing problem , over torque the rear wheel bolt can cause bearing failure.
good luck, I hope this helps.

Yes, on the driveshaft side. How to you check the bearings with the wheel on jacked up. Listen for noise?

what's your tire pressure at? Can you see the tire contacting the driveshaft tube when on the kickstand?

you have to remove the bearings and when you have them in your hand you can feel the free-play in it.
there are service manuals on the internet you can download and it will take you step by step on how to do it.
let us know whet you find. this can help others that have a rub that starts when it didn't rub when they installed the tire first.
I hope this helps and if you need a link let me know and I'll find one for you.

44 psi. Don't have any days off for a couple of weeks so the bearing check will have to wait.
